The best Uganda safari for most first-timers is a 7-day itinerary combining Bwindi gorilla trekking, Queen Elizabeth’s tree-climbing lions, and a boat safari on the Kazinga Channel. But “best” depends on your budget, time, and priorities.
After 15 years and hundreds of safaris guided across every major park in Uganda, I can tell you this with confidence: there is no single “best” safari for everyone. But there is a best safari for YOU. This guide breaks down our top-rated trips, what makes each one special, and exactly who should book which itinerary.
| Safari Type | Duration | Best For | Price Range (per person) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gorillas & Wildlife Express | 7 days | First-timers who want the classics | 2,500−2,500−3,500 |
| Primates & Plains | 10 days | Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers | 3,500−3,500−5,000 |
| Ultimate Uganda | 12 days | Those who want everything | 4,500−4,500−6,500 |
| Gorilla Trekking Special | 4 days | Budget-conscious, gorilla-focused | 1,800−1,800−2,500 |
| Luxury Gorilla & Safari | 8 days | Honeymooners, luxury travelers | 6,000−6,000−9,000 |
| Chimpanzee & Gorilla Combo | 6 days | Primate lovers | 2,200−2,200−3,200 |
The deeper truth: After 15 years of guiding hundreds of travelers through Uganda, I’ve learned that the “best” safari isn’t the longest or the most expensive—it’s the one that matches your energy, your budget, and your dreams. I’ve watched travelers on a 4-day gorilla trek have a more profound experience than someone on a 14-day luxury tour. I’ve also watched travelers regret not adding one more day for chimpanzees. This guide will help you choose the right trip for YOU.

-
Travelers who hate long drives (8-9 hours from Entebbe to Bwindi)

*“Fly, don’t drive. The road to Bwindi is rough and takes 8-9 hours. Aerolink flies from Entebbe to Kihihi (near Bwindi) in 1 hour. It costs $200-300 one-way. If you can afford it, do it. You’ll arrive rested for your trek.”*

What Makes This Safari Different for Photographers
| Feature | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Two game drives on key days | Golden hour (6:30-9:00 AM) + late afternoon (4:00-6:30 PM) = best light |
| Small groups (max 4) | Everyone gets a window seat and can ask the guide to position the vehicle |

| Dedicated tree-lion day | Two game drives in Ishasha to maximize odds |
| Kazinga boat at 2:00 PM | Afternoon light creates beautiful rim lighting on animals |
Why Travelers Love This Safari
-
Optimal photography conditions: Every game drive timed for golden hour
-
Depth over breadth: 2 nights in QENP, 2 nights in Ishasha = more time for the perfect shot
-
Three primate experiences: Chimps, gorillas, plus optional golden monkeys
-
Small group size: Better experience for photographers
Who Should NOT Book This Safari
-
Travelers on a tight budget (more expensive than 7-day due to extra nights)
-
Travelers who want Murchison Falls (not included)
-
Travelers who aren’t photography enthusiasts (extra days may feel repetitive)
Insider Tip
*“Bring a 100-400mm lens minimum. 200-600mm is ideal. And bring a beanbag for the vehicle—it’s more stable than a tripod and won’t annoy other clients. I also recommend a polarizing filter for the Kazinga boat safari—it cuts glare on the water and makes hippos pop.”*

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to book gorilla permits in advance?
Yes—as early as possible. Gorilla permits in Uganda cost $800 and sell out months in advance for peak season (June-September, December-February). We recommend booking permits 3-6 months ahead. For peak season, 6-9 months is safer.
Can I book a safari as a solo traveler?
Yes. All our safaris accept solo travelers. You’ll pay a single supplement for accommodation (varies by lodge, typically $200-400 extra total). We can also try to match you with other solo travelers to share costs—ask us.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Deposits (30% of total) are non-refundable. Full payment is due 60 days before travel. Cancellations 60+ days before travel: deposit forfeited, remainder refunded. Cancellations within 60 days: no refund (permits and lodges are pre-paid and non-refundable). We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers trip cancellation.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes—required. You must have travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and (critical) gorilla trekking. Some policies exclude “adventure activities” like gorilla trekking. Check before you buy. We can recommend providers.
What’s the minimum age for gorilla trekking?
15 years in Uganda. Rwanda’s minimum is also 15. This is strictly enforced. No exceptions.
Can I extend my safari after booking?
Yes. You can add days, parks, or activities up until 60 days before travel (after that, permits may be unavailable). Email us to discuss.
Do your safaris include international flights?
No. We book everything in Uganda (permits, lodging, transport, guides) but not international flights to/from Uganda. We can recommend flight options based on your origin.
What’s the best time of year for each safari?
| Safari | Best Time | Second Best |
|---|---|---|
| Gorilla Trekking Special | June-Sept, Dec-Feb | March-May (wetter, fewer crowds) |
| Chimpanzee & Gorilla Combo | June-Sept, Dec-Feb | March-May (wetter, but chimps active year-round) |
| Gorillas & Wildlife Express | June-Sept (best tree-lion odds) | Dec-Feb |
| Primates & Plains | June-Sept (best light for photography) | Dec-Feb |
| Ultimate Uganda | June-Sept, Dec-Feb | March-May (waterfall more powerful) |
| Luxury Gorilla & Safari | June-Sept, Dec-Feb | Year-round (luxury lodges comfortable in any weather) |

Three Simple Steps to Book
Step 1: Email us at bookings@travelgiantsuganda.com with:
-
Your preferred travel dates
-
How many days you have
-
Your budget (per person)
-
Your top priorities (gorillas, chimps, tree lions, etc.)
Step 2: We’ll recommend the perfect safari (even if it’s not one of the seven above), check permit and lodge availability, and send you a complete quote within 24-48 hours.
Step 3: Review, ask questions, then confirm with a 30% deposit. We handle the rest—permits, lodges, transport, guides, everything.
Imagine it: You’re in Bwindi, heart pounding, as a silverback emerges from the thick vegetation, looks at you, and carries on eating. You’re on the Kazinga Channel, sunset lighting up hundreds of hippos. You’re scanning a fig tree in Ishasha, hoping to see a lion—and then you do.
Uganda is waiting. The gorillas are waiting. And now, you have the guide to choose your perfect safari.
