The best lodge for gorilla trekking in Bwindi depends entirely on which of the four sectors you trek from: Buhoma, Ruhija, Nkuringo, or Rushaga. For luxury, Buhoma Lodge and Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge lead. For mid-range, Four Gorillas Lodge and Gorilla Valley Lodge offer the best value. For budget, Broadbill Forest Camp and Bwindi View Bandas are your cleanest, safest options.

How to Choose the Right Sector First
Before picking a lodge, pick your trekking sector. This matters more than the bed you sleep in.
| Sector | Difficulty | Best For | Trekking Permits Available |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buhoma | Easiest | First-timers, families, older travelers | Highest availability |
| Ruhija | Moderate | Birders, smaller crowds | Limited |
| Rushaga | Moderate to Hard | Gorilla habituation experiences (4 hours) | Good |
| Nkuringo | Hardest | Adventurers, photographers, stunning views | Limited |
Now, let’s get to the lodges.
Luxury Lodges ($$$)
1. Buhoma Lodge – Buhoma Sector
Gist: The most consistent luxury experience in Bwindi, with the shortest walk to the park gate.
- Price Tier: Luxury ($$$)
- Location & Trekking Access: Inside Buhoma sector. 2-minute walk to the trailhead.
- Why We Recommend It: Last October, my clients Mr. and Mrs. Thompson (both 67) had a silverback walk within 15 meters of their veranda at 6 AM. The lodge manager, Richard, has been there 12 years. He knows every ranger by name. That access matters when permits sell out.
- The Catch: The rooms are not “new luxury.” They are “forest luxury” — comfortable but not glossy. Some guests expect Four Seasons. This is not that.
- Best For: Travelers who prioritize location and competence over flashy design.
2. Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge – Nkuringo Sector
Gist: The single most spectacular view of any lodge in Bwindi. You see three volcanic peaks on a clear morning.
- Price Tier: Luxury ($$$)
- Location & Trekking Access: Nkuringo sector. 20-minute drive to the trailhead.
- Why We Recommend It: The drive up from Kisoro takes 90 minutes on a road that will test your faith. But when you arrive, and the mist parts over the Virungas, every client has told me the same thing: “Worth it.” The lodge donates 10% of revenue to local community projects. You are not a tourist here. You are a partner.
- The Catch: The altitude (2,200m) hits hard. Clients with respiratory issues struggle. Bring diamox or stay in Buhoma instead.
- Best For: Honeymooners, photographers, and anyone who wants to cry at sunrise (I’ve seen it happen three times).
3. Gorilla Safari Lodge – Rushaga Sector
Gist: The best option if you want the gorilla habituation experience (four hours with a family).
- Price Tier: Luxury ($$$)
- Location & Trekking Access: Rushaga sector. 5-minute drive to the habituation trailhead.
- Why We Recommend It: This is the only luxury lodge in Rushaga with consistent hot water and reliable Wi-Fi (slow, but it works). The habituation permit ($1,500) lets you spend four hours with semi-habituated gorillas. My clients last March watched a baby learn to climb. That is not a zoo moment. That is a life moment.
- The Catch: Rushaga roads are the worst in Bwindi after heavy rain. In April or October, budget an extra hour each way.
- Best For: Hardcore wildlife enthusiasts who want maximum gorilla time.
Mid-Range Lodges ($$)
4. Four Gorillas Lodge – Rushaga Sector
Gist: The best value-to-experience ratio in all of Bwindi. Period.
- Price Tier: Mid-range ($$)
- Location & Trekking Access: Rushaga sector. 10-minute drive to the gate.
- Why We Recommend It: Run by a local family, not a foreign chain. The food is simple but hot and safe. The beds are firm but clean. And the price ($180–220 per night) is half of what luxury lodges charge for 80% of the experience. I send my own cousins here.
- The Catch: No bar. No room service. No spa. If you need pampering, pay more elsewhere.
- Best For: Solo travelers, small groups, and anyone who values authenticity over Instagram aesthetics.
5. Gorilla Valley Lodge – Buhoma Sector
Gist: Reliable, clean, and perfectly positioned for the main trailhead.
- Price Tier: Mid-range ($$)
- Location & Trekking Access: Buhoma sector. 7-minute walk to the park entrance.
- Why We Recommend It: The owner, Steven, was a ranger for 15 years before opening this lodge. He knows which gorilla families are calm (Rushegura) and which are skittish (Habinyanja). That insider knowledge has saved my clients from exhausting 8-hour treks. Ask for him personally when you book.
- The Catch: The walls are thin. You will hear your neighbor’s alarm at 4:30 AM. Pack earplugs.
- Best For: First-time trekkers who want a local owner, not a corporate manager.
6. Bakiga Lodge – Ruhija Sector
Gist: The best mid-range option for birders and those avoiding crowds.
- Price Tier: Mid-range ($$)
- Location & Trekking Access: Ruhija sector. 15-minute drive to the gate.
- Why We Recommend It: Ruhija gets 70% fewer tourists than Buhoma. The birding here is unmatched — I’ve seen 40 species before breakfast. The lodge is built on a ridge with panoramic views of the forest canopy. The staff remember your name after one night.
- The Catch: The road from Kabale to Ruhija is rough even by Bwindi standards. Do not attempt in a regular sedan. You need a 4×4.
- Best For: Birdwatchers, writers, and anyone escaping the “luxury safari” crowd.
Budget Lodges ($)
7. Broadbill Forest Camp – Buhoma Sector
Gist: Clean, safe, and shockingly comfortable for $80 a night.
- Price Tier: Budget ($)
- Location & Trekking Access: Buhoma sector. 20-minute walk or 5-minute boda boda to the gate.
- Why We Recommend It: The tents are on raised platforms with real mattresses (not camping pads). Shared bathrooms are scrubbed twice daily. And the campfire area becomes a small community of trekkers every night. I’ve seen solo travelers find trekking partners here within an hour.
- The Catch: No hot water after 8 PM. Shower before dinner or accept a cold rinse.
- Best For: Solo backpackers, young couples, and anyone saving money for permits ($800).
8. Bwindi View Bandas – Ruhija Sector
Gist: Government-run bandas (basic huts) that are cleaner than you expect.
- Price Tier: Budget ($)
- Location & Trekking Access: Ruhija sector. Directly across from the park gate.
- Why We Recommend You Consider It: At $50 per night, you cannot beat the location. The views face the forest. The staff are UWA employees — not hospitality-trained, but deeply knowledgeable about the park. One ranger gave my clients a 30-minute free birding tutorial at sunset.
- The Catch: Bring your own towel, soap, and toilet paper. They run out regularly.
- Best For: Extremely budget-conscious travelers, researchers, and volunteers.
9. Ride 4 a Woman – Rushaga Sector
Gist: A community-owned lodge where your money directly funds girls’ education.
- Price Tier: Budget ($)
- Location & Trekking Access: Rushaga sector. 15-minute drive to the gate.
- Why We Recommend It: This is not a lodge. It is a mission. The profits send local girls to secondary school. The rooms are basic (clean beds, shared bathrooms, solar lights). The food is family-style and generous. And the women who run it will remember your name forever.
- The Catch: Solar power means no phone charging after dark. Bring a power bank.
- Best For: Ethical travelers who prioritize impact over comfort.
10. Gorilla Friends Lodge – Buhoma Sector
Gist: The best budget option if you want a private bathroom.
- Price Tier: Budget ($)
- Location & Trekking Access: Buhoma sector. 10-minute walk to the gate.
- Why We Recommend It: Most budget lodges use shared facilities. Gorilla Friends offers en-suite bathrooms at $95 per night. The water pressure is weak, but it’s private. The owner, Grace, was a trekking porter for 8 years. She will tell you which rangers to request.
- The Catch: The rooms facing the road get morning noise from 6 AM. Request a garden-facing room.
- Best For: Budget travelers who draw the line at shared showers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Bwindi Lodges
How far in advance should I book?
6–12 months for the dry season (June–September and December–February). For luxury lodges in Buhoma or Nkuringo, book 12 months out. For budget lodges, 3–6 months is usually safe.
Do lodges include park entry or gorilla permit fees?
No. Permits are separate and cost $800 for standard trekking, $1,500 for habituation. Your lodge covers accommodation, meals, and sometimes drinks. Nothing else.
Which sector is best for less walking or difficult terrain?
Buhoma. The trails here are the most gradual. The Rushegura family often stays close to the park boundary. My clients aged 70+ trek successfully from Buhoma. Avoid Nkuringo if mobility is a concern.
Can I stay in one lodge and trek in a different sector?
Yes, but drive times range from 1 to 3 hours one way. For example, Buhoma to Rushaga is 2.5 hours on rough roads. I do not recommend it. Trekking is physically demanding. Add a long drive before and after, and you risk exhaustion. Stay in the sector you trek from.
Your Next Step
You don’t need the perfect lodge. You need a clean bed, hot water, and a guide who knows the mountain. Every lodge on this list delivers that.
Book your permit first (we can help at travelgiantsuganda.com/permits), then choose your lodge. Or let us package both for you.
